Up Here is in it's 5th year, celebrating music, murals, and the weird specialities of Sudbury (I'm looking at you, Porchetta Bingo).
This year's festival brought heavy hitters like Patrick Watson, Charlotte Day Wilson, and Venetian Snares & Daniel Lanois to the northern town as well as my first chance to see Jeremy Dutcher and Geoffroy. If you haven't heard of (or seen) Random Recipe, I caught them twice and the Montreal band will put you in the best mood.
In addition to the music, Up Here offers tours and glimpses into the artistic world of Sudbury. On Saturday I took a tour of the murals throughout the city, by local artists and international heavyweights alike (Ola Volo, Ella & Pitr)
If you want to discover more french artists than we see in Toronto, dance under a geodesic dome, or just need an excuse to visit Sudbury, Up Here Festival may be your ticket.
Thanks to Up Here for being the most welcoming hosts, and Exclaim! Magazine for sending me to cover this gem with writer Tom Beedham. You can find his reviews and coverage of Up Here....here.
